The Theological Education Exploratory Foresight Report is a monthly resource from The Futuring Hub for Theo-Futures Research at Acadia Divinity College, equipping theological educators to prepare leaders for a rapidly changing world. The August 2025 edition highlights three critical signals shaping the future of theological education:
-
Embracing ‘Systemness’ – A strategic shift from institutional isolation toward coordinated networks, alliances, and shared services. By collaborating rather than competing, theological schools can preserve diversity, increase innovation, and strengthen sustainability while responding to demographic, financial, and cultural pressures.
-
Overload in Donor Communication – In an era of digital saturation, emotionally intense fundraising appeals risk donor fatigue and mistrust. Theological institutions are urged to adopt emotionally balanced, relational, and value-driven storytelling to foster trust, deepen connections, and ensure long-term financial stability.
-
Beyond Job Polarization – The Rise of Functional Value – AI and automation are reshaping the labor market, shifting the focus from job titles to task-based resilience. Theological education must prepare students for roles that leverage uniquely human capabilities—empathy, judgment, adaptability—while integrating AI literacy and ethical discernment into vocational formation.
Rich with practical recommendations, theological reflection prompts, and strategic insights, this report invites educators to innovate, collaborate, and adapt in ways that sustain mission and relevance in an evolving landscape.
