IN THIS EDITION

This month’s report features three emerging signals and one early signal that may influence how we teach, lead, and imagine the future of Christian formation.

IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS INCLUDE:

  • Compound Driver Trends: Mega-trends formed at the intersection of multiple trends, driving complex, systemic change with distinct and interconnected possible futures.
  • Established Signals: Observable and quantifiable patterns of change with broad and long-term impact.
  • Emerging Signals: Developing factors that may shape the future, though their long-term impact remains uncertain.
  • Early Signals: Subtle, initial indicators of potential disruption that could significantly shape the future if they gain momentum.
  • Transformative Disruption: Fundamental shifts in theological education models (e.g., decentralized theological education, AI-driven curricula). Paradigm changes in how theological knowledge is constructed and transmitted (e.g., emergence of self-curated spirituality).
  • Substantive Disruption: Significant modifications to pedagogy, curriculum, or delivery (e.g., hybrid learning models, micro-credentials). Expansion of interdisciplinary approaches (e.g., theology combined with social justice or
    technology studies).
  • Incremental Disruption: Minor changes within existing frameworks (e.g., updated accreditation standards, new course offerings).

This report is not a prediction, it is a prompt – a prompt for meaningful dialogue among faculty, staff, and administrators about the futures we are preparing students for, and the innovations that might be required to meet those futures with
faithfulness and courage.

Translating foresight into innovation and strategy is the next essential step. If you’re ready to explore how to do that in your context, we invite you to connect with Joel Murphy (joel.murphy@acadiau.ca) to discuss how the Futuring Hub can support your next steps.

Let’s step into the future together.
