IN THIS EDITION

This month’s report features two established signals, two emerging signals and one early signal that may influence how Christian leaders approach their mission and the future of the Canadian church. Important definitions include:

  • Compound Driver Trends: Mega-trends formed at the intersection of multiple trends, driving complex, systemic change with distinct and interconnected possible futures.
  • Established Signals: Observable and quantifiable patterns of change with broad and long-term impact.
  • Emerging Signals: Developing factors that may shape the future, though their long-term impact remains uncertain. Early Signals: Subtle, initial indicators of potential disruption that could significantly shape the future if they gain momentum.
  • Transformative Disruption: Fundamental shifts that reshape core structures and assumptions within the Church and its ministries. These may include new paradigms of how faith is practiced, experienced, or understood (e.g., decentralized expressions of church, AI-enabled spiritual guidance, or the rise of self-curated spirituality).
  • Substantive Disruption: Significant changes to systems, practices, or priorities within existing frameworks. These could involve reimagining ministry models, expanded roles, or integrating new disciplines or technologies (e.g., hybrid worship models, new leadership pathways, or integration of social justice with theology)
  • Incremental Disruption: Smaller, gradual changes that adjust current practices without altering foundational structures (e.g., updates to governance processes, introducing new ministry tools, or adding outreach programs in response to shifting community needs).

This report is not an exhaustive account of the Hubs research but meant to be exploratory and offer a snapshot to help church, Christian organizational, and denominational leaders stay engaged with the work of the Futuring Hub and, more importantly, cultivate anticipatory thinking and strategic foresight.

It is not a prediction; it is a prompt. A prompt to support meaningful dialogue and reflection about the futures you and your organization are preparing for, and the innovations that might be required to meet those futures with faithfulness and courage.

Translating foresight into innovation and strategy is the next essential step. If you’re ready to explore how to do that in your context or have specific questions or insights, please connect with Joel Murphy (joel.murphy@acadiau.ca) to discuss possible collaborative opportunities.

The future is unfolding, let’s step into the future together.
